Meet Aweys Ali
Aweys Ali, also known as Abu Adnan Al-Sumal, is a Somali-American Muslim author, educator, community leader, publisher, and nonprofit founder based in Louisville, Kentucky.
He arrived in the United States in 2004, lived in Atlanta, Georgia, and relocated to Louisville in 2008. His experiences as an immigrant, husband, father, faith-community servant, and grassroots leader shaped a commitment to writing and institution-building.
A journey of service
In 2016, Aweys was elected Vice President of the Somali Bantu Association of Louisville. In 2020, he became Secretary of Masjid Abubakar Islamic Center of Louisville. In 2025, he founded Afrikana Community Center Inc. to strengthen African immigrant and refugee families through youth development, education, family support, resource navigation, cultural connection, and community partnerships.
